Mambo Kings performance & after party
Join Latinx Alumni Network and fellow alumni and friends on August 7th for a quintessential Chicago summer evening and performance by Mambo Kings in Jay Pritzker Pavilion.
About Mambo Kings: together since 1995, Mambo Kings are enjoying great success as Upstate New York’s foremost Latin jazz ensemble, and have rapidly earned a national reputation for their explosive blend of Afro-Cuban rhythms and jazz improvisation. Since their orchestral debut in 1997 with the Rochester Philharmonic and conductor Jeff Tyzik, Mambo Kings have appeared at the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival and in pops concerts with orchestras in Baltimore, Vancouver, Detroit, Dallas, Naples (Florida) and Portland (Oregon), among many others, performing original compositions and arrangements by pianist Richard DeLaney. As a quintet, Mambo Kings have appeared as featured soloists at the 2003 and 2008 Xerox Rochester International Jazz Fest, Music in the Mountains Festival in Colorado, Lewiston (New York) Jazz Fest and the 2017 Big Sky Arts Fest in Bozeman, Montana. The group’s 2016-2017 season opened with shows in Chattanooga and Fort Lewis (Arkansas) and included return performances with the Vancouver and Dallas Symphony Orchestras. Their 2017-2018 season featured shows with the Spokane and Louisville Symphonies, Rochester Philharmonic and New Jersey Symphony.
This performance is free and will take place at Jay Pritzker Pavilion – please be sure to read Grant Park Music Festival venue information before the event. We recommend you bring a blanket and picnic – outside food and beverage (including wine and beer) is permitted. Look for a UChicago sign to find the group!
