Chicago Harris Lecture Series: Mexico City
You are invited to attend the Chicago Harris Lecture Series in Mexico City featuring Paula Worthington, Senior Lecturer at Chicago Harris, on October 28, 2015, at 7 p.m. Worthington teaches classes in public finance and cost-benefit analysis and is actively involved in teaching, advising, and programming as part of the Municipal Finance Certificate program and related initiatives.
Worthington's talk will be on "Strengthening the Finances of States and Municipalities: Lessons from Mexico and the United States." States and cities in Mexico and the U.S. face considerable challenges in keeping their budgets balanced while providing needed services to their residents. While both countries have federal systems of government, they differ in the roles and responsibilities of sub-national governments. How can these states and localities raise adequate revenues, manage debt, pension, and other liabilities, and increase the efficiency of service provision? We will consider evidence from Mexico and the U.S., especially Illinois and Chicago, to explore these questions.
